Discovering the practice

Gerald Avery is based in Los Angeles, California. Looking to continue a relationship with his mother after her passing in 2017, Gerald discovered meditation. Gently meeting and moving through grief, not only did the relationship evolve into a rich and colorful connection, but other discoveries were made in his explorations. Discoveries such as recurring thought patterns, deep conditioning, interconnectedness, resting in awareness, holding space for others and deep listening. His daily practice over the years has shined a light on clarity, alignment, equanimity and authenticity in the moment to moment journey of life.

The practice

Gerald applies the tools of mindfulness and meditation to help guide individuals to their fundamental inner resources within a safe environment. He includes visual arts to help deepen the understanding and experience of the practice. Throughout class we will connect to awareness, drop into our senses and observe thought patterns. With consistent practice, neural networks in the brain will begin to change through growth and reorganization. This rewiring can lead to fresh perspectives and new behaviors.

The beginner’s mind

Gerald received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Dance from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. He then went on to perform professionally in New York and Los Angeles appearing on Broadway and television. While performing, Gerald also taught dance around the country and abroad, managing classrooms of hundreds of students, consisting of different levels and ages.

Accessing skills from years of teaching dance, guiding others in meditation proved to be a smooth transition. Along with years of daily practice, Gerald received his teacher training certification from The Den Meditation. Logging 400 hours of studying the history, philosophy and fundamental techniques for teaching meditation. He is continuing his studies at UCLA-Mindful Awareness Research Center. Gerald is also a Registered Alcohol and Drug Technician through the California Consortium of Addiction Programs and Professionals. In his spare time he enjoys attending retreats at Spirit Rock Meditation Center and spending time with his family.
